During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an bold beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
