France to begin stopping small boats in Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to start intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and stating there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have rarely acted to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former government official departed from office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
